Description

SpindleStorm3™ CNC Chip Fan: The Ultimate Billet Aluminum Spindle Blower

Stop wasting production time manually blowing off parts and fixtures. The SpindleStorm3™ CNC Chip Fan by Gimbel Automation is a premium, spindle-mounted chip and coolant clearing fan (also called a CNC chip blower) designed to automate your machine cleaning process.

Machined from solid billet aluminum, the SpindleStorm3™ delivers massive airflow without the fragility of plastic folding blades or the poor performance of traditional solid fans.

What's New in SpindleStorm3™

SpindleStorm3™ is a complete redesign of the blade geometry, not an incremental update. Compared to the previous generation:

  • 3x the airflow. The new blade design moves roughly three times the air of the original SpindleStorm™, clearing heavy chips and standing coolant in a fraction of the time.
  • Inward-swept blades at twice the height. The six blades are now swept inward and stand twice as tall, moving far more air per revolution at the same rated speed.
  • Improved airfoil profile. A refined airfoil section generates more thrust without increasing spindle load or the 10,000 RPM rating.

Same solid billet construction, same 16mm shank, same single ATC pocket. If you run the original SpindleStorm™, the 3 is a drop-in replacement with dramatically more clearing power.

Why Choose the SpindleStorm3™ Over Folding Chip Fans?

Many CNC machinists have experienced the frustration of plastic folding chip fans. While they move air, the nylon blades eventually fatigue, snap, and require expensive rebuild kits. Furthermore, large folding fans often hog three valuable pockets in your automatic tool changer (ATC).

The SpindleStorm3™ solves these problems entirely. As a solid billet aluminum chip fan, it offers indestructible durability. We engineered the SpindleStorm3™ with inward-swept, high-lift airfoil blades that produce the high-volume thrust needed to clear heavy chips and deep coolant lakes, outperforming other solid fans on the market like the Big Kaiser unit. For a deeper look at why solid billet designs are replacing folding blades, read our chip fan buying guide.

How the SpindleStorm3™ Compares

SpindleStorm3™ Folding Chip Fans Traditional Solid Fans
Blade material Solid billet aluminum Nylon/plastic blades Aluminum or plastic
ATC pockets used 1 Often 3 1
Rebuild kits Never needed Required as blades fatigue Varies
Airflow 3x previous generation, high-lift airfoil blades High when new, degrades as blades wear Typically low
Failure mode None. One piece, no moving parts Snapped blades in the work zone Varies

CNC Machine Compatibility

The SpindleStorm3™ mounts in any standard collet chuck or end mill holder with 16mm capacity, so it is compatible with Haas, Brother, Fanuc Robodrill, DMG Mori, Doosan, Hurco, Mazak, and any other vertical machining center that accepts a 16mm shank tool. Requirements are simple: a fully enclosed machine and a spindle capable of 2,000 to 10,000 RPM. It loads from the tool changer like any other tool and runs as a programmed step in your cycle, which makes it a natural fit for lights-out and robot-tended machining.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Indestructible Billet Construction: Machined from a single piece of high-strength billet aluminum. No hinges, no pins, and absolutely no plastic blades to break or replace.
  • 3x Airflow, High-Lift Airfoil Blades: Inward-swept blades at twice the height of the previous generation deliver triple the air volume to blast away chips and coolant faster than competing solid fans.
  • Precision Balanced: Single-piece construction ensures perfect concentricity and balance at high RPMs, protecting your machine's spindle bearings and encoders.
  • Single-Pocket ATC Friendly: Compact, rigid design means it only takes up one tool pocket in your carousel or side-mount tool changer.
  • Coolant-Through Compatible: Designed to work seamlessly with through-spindle coolant (TSC) systems to wash down parts before the high-speed air blast.
  • Automated Cleaning: Program the SpindleStorm3™ at the end of your machining cycle to clean parts unattended, allowing operators to unload clean, dry parts immediately.

Operating Recommendations

To maximize the life of your SpindleStorm3™ CNC chip fan and ensure safe operation within your enclosed machining center:

  1. Mount securely in a high-quality collet chuck or end mill holder.
  2. Program a safe Z-height clearance (typically 4 to 6 inches above the part/fixture).
  3. Always ramp up the spindle speed. Start at 2,000 RPM and ramp up to the operating speed to prevent spindle shock.
  4. Use in fully enclosed CNC machines only.

The Gimbel Automation Advantage

At Gimbel Automation, we build fast-ROI CNC tending solutions. The SpindleStorm3™ CNC Chip Fan integrates perfectly into our ecosystem of GimGrippers™, AutoVises™, and automated pallet changers. By adding the SpindleStorm3™ to your process, you ensure that your automated systems are gripping clean parts and loading onto chip-free fixtures, drastically reducing scrap rates and operator intervention.

FAQs

A CNC chip fan is a spindle-mounted fan that clears metal chips and coolant from parts, fixtures, and vises inside the machine. It loads from the tool changer like any other tool and runs as a programmed step at the end of the machining cycle, so parts come out clean and dry without an operator picking up an air gun.

If your machine is fully enclosed and accepts a 16mm shank in a collet chuck or end mill holder, yes. That covers virtually every modern VMC, including Haas, Brother, Fanuc Robodrill, DMG Mori, Doosan, Hurco, and Mazak.

Start at 2,000 RPM and ramp up to your operating speed, up to the rated 10,000 RPM. Ramping protects the spindle from shock loading.

Yes. The SpindleStorm3™ has a 4mm through hole and is designed to work with TSC systems: wash the part down with coolant first, then blast it dry with the air stream.

Triple the airflow. The blades are swept inward, twice the height, and use an improved airfoil profile. Footprint, shank size, and RPM rating are unchanged, so it is a drop-in upgrade.
